The Center for Aquatic Sciences is a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting the community with the natural world through science education and conservation. Located on the banks of the Delaware River in Camden, it is an integral part of environmental education for families, students, and schools across South Jersey and the greater Philadelphia region.
Founded in 1989 and originally named the New Jersey Academy for Aquatic Sciences, it was initially focused on managing the state aquarium in Camden. After the aquarium was converted to the popular Adventure Aquarium in 2005, the organization’s mission evolved. Its focus is now on expanding hands-on science education and community programming.
Amy Durkin, manager of marketing and sales, helps connect schools, families, and community groups with the center’s programs, which include camps, school programs, and teen internships.
“My goal is to make science approachable, engaging, and fun so more students get involved,” Durkin said.
At the core of the center’s mission lies the idea of youth empowerment as well as environmental stewardship. The mission of the center is to assist youth in understanding aquatic ecosystems, as well as encouraging them to protect the environment. The organization focuses on serving students in the Camden area, but also has programming in the Pinelands and at the shore.
“We focus on hands-on education that connects students directly to aquatic ecosystems and shows them the importance of protecting our waterways,” Durkin said.
Durkin said that one of the organization’s strengths is that it can tailor programs to meet the needs of educators, families, and community organizations.
“What truly sets us apart is our ability to meet people where they are and turn teachable moments into core memories,” said Durkin. “Teachers, parents, and community partners come to us with a need, and we work with them to create meaningful experiences that fit.”
One of the organization’s biggest programs is Community and Urban Science Enrichment (CAUSE), which provides teenagers in Camden with hands-on science experiences, mentorships, and career opportunities in science.
“When young people realize they are capable of understanding science and contributing to environmental solutions, it is incredibly inspiring,” said Durkin. “Being part of an organization that sparks curiosity, confidence, and responsibility for the natural world is something I am proud to be involved in.”
